First launched in 1996, the AUDA program has highlighted the critical role of good design in shaping Australia’s urban environment for more than 25 years. The final award for Leadership, Advocacy and Research – Local and Neighbourhood Scale went to Campsie Town Centre Masterplan, delivered by the City of Canterbury Bankstown Council in NSW. Previous winners
The series of considered and in-depth design responses are promising of an exciting trajectory for this emerging practice. While the site and existing building aren’t noted for their individual heritage contribution or significance, they fall within the fine-grain precinct of the Woollahra Heritage Conservation Area C15 of inner Sydney. The building’s neighbours are the outbuildings of larger, individually noted heritage buildings fronting major streets either side of the lane. The original building (C. 1980) has been carefully considered and predominantly reused by the architects in a confident manner, but with a light touch. A familiar Queensland worker’s cottage has been transformed into a lush planted oasis.
Transformed back to its bohemian spirit by honouring the original architecture, fit for a prince. The main bedroom has a lush private garden and privacy screens cantilevered over the courtyard. The joinery throughout the home has been crafted so expertly, it’s seamless. The residence is fitted with the latest technology and automation system and a self-sustained battery generator.
The gallery of landscape beyond dominates the interior, allowing confident, natural finishes to create a restful quality to the experience. Bookended by glass-block walls that softly diffuse light throughout, the house revolves around a concrete spiral staircase rising through its three luminous levels. One jury member commented on the seamless execution and how it feels like you can actually live in it, while another noted the project has a wonderful spirit that is overwhelmingly endearing and WIuplifting.
